HOW WE HELP
What is Child adolescent psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a form of therapy in which a person with mental or emotional challenges can talk through these challenges with a qualified person. With successful psychotherapy, a client can experiences positive change, resolves or mitigates troublesome behaviours, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts or emotions. Ideally, these are replaced with more pleasant and functional alternatives.
Depending on their age, children and young adults engage in therapy in different ways. Typically, children who are twelve years old and younger lack the language skills required to explore and express their feelings. For children under twelve, play therapy can be particularly beneficial. This therapy model can help younger children express themselves and their feelings, help them learn coping mechanism and improve confidence. Finally, it can help children better navigate home, school and friends interactions.
For many parents it is a big decision to bring their child to therapy, but a decision which can really help both the child and the rest of the family. Some parents just need a little help undertsanding common developmental problems. For others, there are complex family issues or specific tragic events which need to be untangled and processed.
As specialist child & adolescent Psychotherapists, we are trained to help each child unlock their difficulties, to express their emotions and to help them understand the problem better. We always tailor our approach to each individual child’s needs, using age-appropriate interactions and activities to navigate through the therapeutic process. Ultimately, the aim of child psychotherapy is to have a positive impact on relationships and behaviour in the home and school, to help the child or adolescent to become better in managing their mental and physical health and to work through their emotions.
Our Sessions & Treatments
During therapy we use a wide range of amazing therapeutic aids such as sand trays, board games, flash cards and figures. Children are well known to both communicate and process problems through play and the use of these aids are fantastic in helping children overcome their struggles.
Psychotherapy includes interactive processes between client and psychotherapist. The aim is to increase the individual’s sense of his or her own well-being. We employ a range of techniques designed to improve the mental health of our clients, or to improve group relationships such as within a family system.
Most importantly, with children we believe the parents or primary caregivers are essential to helping the child overcome and recover from their challenges. Therefore, we closely collaborate with parents and other mental health bodies to ensure your child get the best help possible.
Common Concerns
Children and young adults require therapy when they have problems which they can’t cope with on their own. These could be family problems, concerns about school, health issues, bullying or children who have gone through traumatic experiences. These situations often effect how a child or young person thinks, feels or behaves. Sometime issues will resolve themselves without help, but therapy can really improve the situation in which the child find themselves in. Sometimes the entire family needs support to overcome problems, learn to communicate better or set boundaries.
If you feel that your child is overly suffering from sadness, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger issues, stress, worry or grief then therapy might be the best course of action not only for your child but for the whole family.
Equally, children and young adults who suffer from ADHD, depression, OCD, eating disorders, self-harm, disruptive behaviour disorders and trauma-related disorders, working with a trained psychotherapist should be staple part of their weekly activities. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s behaviour then do not hesitate to contact us.
Psychotherapy Process & Benifits
We start by trying to identify and understand a child or young person’s concerns, worries or distress. Through conversation, creative tasks or play therapy we listening to, and carefully observe, what each young person is trying to communicate and how they show their emotions. Trust starts to be built between the child, young adult and their therapist. We create a safe and supportive environment which helps the individual feel confident enough to open up about their feelings. We always work at the child or young person’s pace and together we discuss those feeling which can be overwhelming, scary or make us feel out of control.
The very act of naming those feelings or concerns and understanding how they create worries is a key step for the young people. Not only does it help them to feel understood, but it also importantly gives each emotions an identity. Once named, it is typically easier for the child or young adult to openly discuss it, think about how it is affecting them and how to recognise the impact it is having on their lives and others.
Child psychology can be challenging. Often feelings and emotions do not immediately show themselves through creative or play therapy. Our highly-trained team are experts in working to understand what lies beneath behaviours such as aggression, sadness, anxiety or hyperactivity.
