What is Anxiety?

We’ve all come across a dangerous or stressful situation which provoked feelings of panic, anxiety, and fear in us. Fortunately, for most of us, these feelings are completely natural and do not occur very often. However, for people with anxiety disorders, these feelings occur regularly and can strike at any time, causing significant distress and leaving them feeling extremely frightened, powerless and out of control.

Anxiety can also produce unpleasant side-effects of sweating, tension, panic and avoidance behavior, and if left untreated can cause wider difficulties in your relationships, at work and in your general mood levels.

The Causes of Anxiety?

The exact cause of anxiety is not fully understood. For some, traumatic events seem to be a trigger for anxiety, especially in people who are already predisposed to anxiety disorders. There are some schools of thought which suggest anxiety is an inherited trait. For some individuals’ anxiety can be linked to underlying health conditions. In these cases, anxiety symptoms and signs can be the first indication of a medial illness such as diabetes, heart disease, thyroid problems, chronic pains syndrome, respiratory disorders and in some rare cases even tumours. Anxiety may also be cause by us illegal drugs or through drug withdrawal, connected to alcoholism or the result of taking or stopping certain medicines.

There are also a series of factors which can increase the chances of developing anxiety. These include experiencing trauma, suffering from prolonged stress due to illness or experiencing a particularly large stressful event or the build-up of smaller stresses. People with certain personality types can also be more likely to develop anxiety disorders, especially those who suffer from a history of depression or other mental health disorders. Finally, those who have a family history of anxiety, especially blood relatives, may be more likely to more susceptible to anxiety.

Not only are people with anxiety more likely to worry, if untreated, it can worsen and lead to other mental or physical health problems. Some of the most common are depression, substance abuse, insomnia, chronic pain or headaches, digestive issues and social or functional behavioural problems.

Anxiety & Its Symptoms

Psychotherapy and counselling can help you deal with your anxiety by exploring both the root causes of your anxious feelings and the factors that are maintaining your anxiety problems.

There are several conditions for which anxiety is the main symptom including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), hyper-vigilance, depression, dizzy spells, tightness in the chest, unsettled tummy, forgetfulness and disorientation, all of which tend to be focused on specific issues or events.

Alternatively, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety condition that is characterised by excessive, uncontrollable, and non-specific worry.

Anxiety & Counselling
